You can’t really know what it’s like to be stranded in a jury room while the team is on campaign, but you can read about it because I hand-typed it. So I was there with 11 or 12 others - not really counting, but rather, thinking, imagining. We were supposed to be talking about her, and if she did it, or if he did, or if his lover did. Rain streamed down the windows, obscuring the view of the adjacent building. A fluorescent light ballast whined. … [Read more...]
The Plan
It was early when I swept the Bourbonneur from his front curb. Fishing-with-Pépé early. The range was extended for the morning, which required an abnormally early sequence initiation. Items were neatly crammed into satchels of various sizes: foil-wrapped sandwiches, cremes of questionable purpose, an assortment of wearable status indicators—stretchy, wind-blocking, synthetic, natural, tight, manly, elite—multiple helmets, shoes, duct tape, spare … [Read more...]
The Sock I Loved, Then Lost.
It took no raindrops for your absence to hurt me, but when they fell, the pain was nourished. Your gentle compression was the hallmark of our relationship. Compression. Compassion. Your surface enveloped my toes in an embrace. You pulled the moisture from them with all your heart. The medial toes grew jealous of big toe and pinky, for by design—and without any chance for change—you afforded them less contact. We all embraced the passion of … [Read more...]
Things I Learned from Him: ’90-’94
It was a pretty standard, which is to say excellent, tutelage I was under as the young me, and at a great time: I was between jobs (I quit my paper route and couldn't yet convince my local shop to hire me), school was under control (I was fine with Cs), and my social life was on cruise control (nobody understood me so who needs friends anyways plus you just don't understand me). Enter Him. He was a family man, which is to say, he was a guy who … [Read more...]
A Sunday in Hell
As I arrived to my login for the day, I was greeted with the following poignant insight from a fellow journeyman mechanic: "When I was having a shitty time at the bench, kind of being overrun by minor gripes &/ gangrenous management, I would watch the bit at the beginning of Sunday in Hell where the Sanson mechanic is cleaning the Benotto, or Bottecchia. It would remind me of how the basics serve to reinforce and inform and make way for … [Read more...]
Arizona Early Season, 2015
Two days of racing are in the books. Yes, that is right. Late January, and the season starts to swing in AZ. We are seeing formative goods in this early season. Special thanks to Chad Beyer for having a good time on our dime. Here's how it went down in Yuma, sans wattage reporttage. Well, I didn't know what to expect from myself at the crits this weekend. I've been training without power, so I didn't really know where my fitness was. I didn't … [Read more...]
Choose The Latter
Country roads were consumed. Canvas pants and denim vest took the place of less organic/more efficient sport garments. Skids were executed needlessly. Cheeks were cold, things were bunny hopped. Winter component modifications were tested and evaluated. Sweat was produced, but muscles never loosened. It was less an act of folly than one of insistence. Nonetheless, i'm still trying to evaluate whether or not the value was positive or negative. … [Read more...]
Underbike 2014: Never again, until we do it again.
We came into Underbike by way of the forever 29th bicycle birthday party that is Interbike. We do this of our own accord every single time. But all we really care about is the rock and roll. Blinded by an expo floor of too many phenomenal things and an uncertainty for eye contact, gives way to real good times at the end of Thursday. Backstory: Superissimo had been a micro-juggernaut until the late spring of 2014 at which point breaking … [Read more...]
Whiskey Off Road, 2014 Reportings
It's known enough that Epic Rides' Whiskey Off-Road is a very faste and hardening event, it being on a legitimate ATB type course and of a middle distance at 50 miles longish. Taking place at the end of April, it makes for a premier early season target - or spring season escape - for all kinds of bike riders from all kinds of places. Toss the $30,000 or so cash prize split for the PRO's, and what started out as a top notch pay-for group ride over … [Read more...]
